Willingdon SC dominate at Grover Zampa golf

Team Willingdon are all smiles after their dominant performance on day one of the 23rd Grover Zampa Vineyard inter-club golf championship in Mumbai.

Four-time champions Willingdon Sports Club came up with a strong performance, scoring 17.5 points to open a six-point lead over Poona Golf Club, US Club and BPGC, all tied on 11.5 points each at the end of the first day of the 23rd Grover Zampa Vineyard inter-club golf championship at the United Services Golf Course in Colaba, Mumbai.

Willingdon looked formidable right from the start as Akshay Kilachand and Ashish Goel defeated Rajiv Kusalkar and Amitabh Mujumdar of US Club in the foursomes. In other matches, Rahul Sood/Rahul Devan and Anand Zaveri/Jay Seth beat BPGC and PGC respectively to add four more points in the foursomes. 

Willingdon dominated the four-balls as well with Pradeep Shah/Sharik Kajiji and Shiddharth Takkar/Chirag Doshi scoring comfortable wins over their Poona Golf Club. Willingdon lost only two matches in the four-balls to lead the table with 17.5 points at the end of the day.

Results: Willingdon Sports Club: 17.5 (foursomes 8, fourballs 9.5); United Services Club: 11.5 (foursomes 4.5, fourballs 7); Bombay Presidency Golf Club: 11.5 (foursomes 6, fourballs 5.5); Poona Golf Club: 11.5 (foursomes 6.5, fourballs 5).

Paul, Puri victorious in Scindia golf

In New Delhi,Chirag Paul and Pranay Puri with net scores of 72.6 and 72.4 walked away with the winner’s trophy in the Madhav Rao Scindia charity golf tournament played at the DLF Golf and Country Club.

The tournament raises funds used to support social development projects undertaken by the Madhav Rao Scindia Foundation. The DLF Golf & Country Club hosted the tournament. 

Along with the winner’s trophy, Paul and Puri also get an opportunity to represent India at the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh world finals at the Windsor Castle grounds later this year. 

The tournament saw participation from over 100 golfers all across Delhi and NCR including former cricketers Murali Karthik and Madan Lal. In other on-course competitions, Manav Sardana walked away with the ‘Trinity longest drive’ prize while Ricky Jaswal won the ‘best gross winner’ award with a round of 77.  

Besides the individual prize categories the tournament also featured the skins format, which produced results on every hole, and is a fast paced style rarely seen in golf tournaments in India.
