Anvitha Narender showed great composure under pressure to outlast the vastly experienced Vani Kapoor in a playoff and win the Mysore leg of the Hero WPGT on Saturday.
It was Anvitha’s second WPGT title and came in the seventh leg of the season at the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Course, the WGAI said.
The young Bangalore golfer first showed great resilience to stage a back-nine recovery and then beat the seasoned Vani on the second hole of the play-off after they finished locked together at 1 under par 209 for the tournament.
Till then it was Vani who held the limelight with the event’s best card, a 6 under par 64 that carried her all the way to the top.
Anvitha carded a 1 under 69, riding a strong back nine display to hold her own against the hard-charging Vani though she did have a chance to win in regulation but bogeyed the final hole.
By then, Vani was in the clubhouse having set the victory target.
Anvitha found herself in the lead on the par-5 18th but dropped a shot even as Riya Jadon — also in contention — managed a par when she needed to birdie the hole to reach the clubhouse total.
Solid placing
Gurgaon rookie Riya (70) finished on level par 210 and in third place.
Both Anvitha and Vani parred the first play-off hole on the par-4 first, leading to a second play-off, this time on the par-4 fifth hole.
The momentum appeared to be with Vani after her stunning comeback, but Anvitha showed remarkable calm for a player still in the early stages of her professional career, making a decisive birdie against Vani’s par.
Itt gave the 20-year-old New Jersey-born Anvitha her second win on the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour after her first win in 2024.
Khushi Khanijau turned in a card of 2 under 68, to tie for fourth with Amandeep Drall (70) and Vidhatri Urs (70) on 2 over 212.
Overnight co-leader Ananyaa carded a 75 to end in a tie for seventh with Mannat Brar (70) while Durga Nittur (74) was ninth.
Finishing tied for 10th on 217 were Neha Tripathi, amateur Ceerat Kang, Ananya Garg and Anvvi Dahhiya.
