Aditi Ashok qualifies for AIG Women’s Open, her 19th Major

Following her Olympian feats at Kasumigaseki GC where she missed a Games medal by a whisker, Aditi Ashok has ensured her berth at the upcoming AIG Women’s Open.

The Indian star finished second in the qualifying field at the historic Panmure Golf Club (6270 yards) in Scotland with a 2-under round of 68, Fifteen players in all made the cut for the year’s final Major.

Sitting mid-pack till early on in the back nine, Aditi picked up three shots in the final six holes to seal her Open berth.

The AIG Women’s Open will be played at the famed Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland, from Thursday through to Sunday.

Aditi was one shot behind America’s Lindsey Weaver in a talented field that also included the upcoming Tvesa Malik, a T29 finisher on 3 over 73.

Four women including Welsh legend Becky Morgan and South Africa’s Nicole Garcia are the nominated reserves.

Aditi, who has been drawn alongside Sung Hyun Park of South Korea and Brittany Altomare of the US, has an early afternoon tee-off in the opening round.

The 23-year-old was the centre of much attention worldwide following her gallant run at the Tokyo Olympic Games where she finished fourth just, outscoring gold medallist Nelly Korda by a shot on the final day.

Indian record

The AIG Women’s Open will be the Bangalore star’s 19th Major championship, a record number of appearances for an Indian. This is her fifth British Open start.

Tweeted the LPGA Tour regular, “Had a nice round of Final qualifying at Panmure today. Excited to play @AIGWomensOpen @carnoustiegolf this week.”

According to the Ladies European Tour website, a number of former winners will be in the fray for the final Major of the year in the 144-strong field.

They include defending champion Sophia Popov, Hinako Shibuno (2019), Georgia Hall (2018), Ariya Jutanugarn (2016), Inbee Park (2015), Mo Martin (2014), Stacy Lewis (2013), Catriona Matthew (2009) and Laura Davies (1986).

The Open will be played at Carnoustie after a gap of 10 years.
