Young Norwegian VIktor Hovland is a two-time PGA Tour winner who has hit a productive streak of consistency in the last few months.
In 2020 Hovland won the Puerto Rican Open and the Maradona Golf Classic, to which he has added a tied third, a shared second, a tied sixth and a T5 across the world.
Hovland plays a fast and aggressive long game choosing clubs that support speed and distance. His short fame is characterised by precision. In this article we take a look at what’s in his bag.
Driver
For a driver Hovland used a Ping G425 LST (9degrees). This modern driver is a pear-shaped which reduces spin. This is of great benefit to faster swinging speed players looking for distance.
The club further benefits from a proprietary T9S forged face that flexes for more play and distance on the strike.
Fairway wood
On the fairway Hovland has opted for the TaylorMade SIM (15 degrees) which was recently introduced to the brand’s range of fairway woods.
It has quickly become a favourite of amateurs and pros alike for its excellent turf interaction and versatility.
It’s V-shaped steel plate is designed to reduce friction and offers users more confidence on various fairway conditions.
Hybrids
Since Hovland is a speed player he tends to choose clubs that support his strongest attributes. In this sense the Titleist TS3 (21 degrees) is the ideal hybrid club for him.
The TS range was specially developed by Titleist to solicit speed from every detail of the club.
They put their best R&D minds to the task and developed a club that lets you swing aggressively and nail the sweet spot with relative ease.
Irons
As with the speedy driver and woods, Hovland extends the philosophy to his irons. The irons in his bag are Callaway X Forged UT (21 degrees).
These irons from Callaway are not recent editions, but they are a favourite of many tour players. The irons are designed to reduce spin and deliver high speed balls for distance shots on the fairway.
WEDGES
When it comes to wedge shots you need a club that supports your best efforts. That calls for the precision engineering of the Ping Glide 3.0.
Hovland took advantage of it during his PGA Tour win.
The Ping Glide 3.0 is redesigned to create higher spin ratios, and softer, lighter, overall design. This wedge is versatile and suits most common turf conditions.
Putter
Perhaps one of the most important and technical clubs in the bag is the putter. For this, Hovland chose the Ping PLD.
This putter is a limited edition Ping prototype developed in 2018. PLD stands for putter lab design which is another way of saying unreleased – not like these Club Car parts and accessories for sale.
It’s difficult to know it’s precise attributes, however, Ping putters are surprisingly light and offer excellent control.
Ball
To win on the PGA Tour you don’t only need great clubs in the bag, you also need the best ball for your game. Hovland chose the Titleist Pro V1 which gives players excellent total performance.
This ball offers longer distance and consistent flight – perfect for Hovland’s speed/distance game. It also provides very good short game control and a soft feel.
