Vasu Sehgal takes NexGen event round two lead in Ludhiana

Chandigarh teenager Vasu Sehgal shot an error-free 5 under par 67 to gain two spots and take the round two lead at the PGTI NexGen event in Ludhiana on Wednesday.

Sehgal, 19, totals 8 under 100 at the Imperial Golf Estate for a comfortable three-shot lead over the field, the PGTI said.

Noida’s Lakshya Nagar too returned a bogey-free 67 that saw him rise 13 spots to tied second on 5 under 103 alongside overnight leader Tushar Pannu of Karnal.

Gurgaon’s Digraj Singh Gill (67) and Manish Thakran (68) along with Karnal’s Rohit Narwal (71) shared fourth place on 4 under 104.

The Imperial Golf Estate is a par-72 nine-hole course played twice to complete a round.

The cut fell at 2 over 110 with 40 players progressing to the third and final round.

Sehgal (33-67), shared third overnight, picked up two shots on the first three holes. 

He then went on to accumulate three consecutive birdies on the second nine to end up with a flawless card for the day.

Iron control

Sehgal, a winner of several junior titles before turning professional in 2023, gave an excellent display of ball-striking and wedge-play on Wednesday.

That left him with three tap-in birdies and he also made a couple of quality up and downs for birdies.

“I hit my approaches really well today and landed it close to the flag on many occasions. However, I wasn’t at my best with the putter today and missed a few conversions,” Sehgal said.

“I’ve gone through some swing and club changes this year. I feel I’m now getting my game together.

“It’s been fun playing a professional event here at Imperial Great Estate for the first time. 

“We are enjoying the layout and the conditions at this course. The key in the final round for me will be hitting as many fairways and greens as possible.”
