Game of Numbers: Will it be 16/82 for Tiger Woods?

A 16th major translating to a record-equalling 82nd PGA Tour title for Tiger Woods has become one of the more prominent of several news hooks for the 115th US Open that gets under way at the spectacular Pebble Beach Golf Links on Thursday.

With major number 15 safely in the bag and this course the setting for probably his greatest win 19 years ago, Tiger finds himself alongside Rory McIlroy and just behind Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka as a punter’s fancy, though he has put out a word of caution already.

“It’s not the same body that I had back in 2000. I don’t think any of us have the same body we had 19 years ago,” Tiger said at his Tuesday press conference.

“The golf ball is going further than it did back in 2000, I’m slower than I was in 2000. Apples to oranges, I guess you could say. I am about the same distance. And so the golf course really doesn’t play that much differently for me.

“It’s just a matter of putting the ball in the right spots. I missed the ball in the correct spots (in 2000)… you look at all my angles. I did not hit every green. I did not hit every fairway, but I always had the proper angle. And gave me the best chance to get up-and-down.

“I poured everything in. Hopefully I can have one of those weeks on the greens again.”

Woods will play alongside 2015 US Open winner Jordan Speith and FedEx Cup winner and 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose, starting among the last groups off tee no. 1.

Koepka is ready

Winner of four majors in the last two years and two-time US Open defending champion Brooks Koepka credits his near-collapse on the final day of the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black for fresh motivation after being seven ahead of Dustin Johnson and haning on to win by two shots.

“Just for the fact that I was stunned. I was kind of shocked and in awe for about an hour there, making four bogeys in a row,” he said at Tuesday’s media interaction.

“I didn’t really know what was up at that point. And then having to re-correct things and kind of reset myself. It’s definitely a big advantage. I mean, we all know in US Opens you could be 4 over through four very easily.

“And you look at it like this week, you get off to a tough start, and all of a sudden I’ve got to reset. Now I know how to do that under pressure. I know how to do that and really handle myself and kind of right the ship. I think that’s going to be important going forward.”

Lahiri upbeat

Meanwhile, Indian hopes are pinned on Anirban Lahiri, who made it to the tournament from the Ohio qualifier two weeks ago. Lahiri tees off as one of the final groups on Thursday with Ollie Schniederjans and Mikumu Horikawa.

Ahead of a Indian record 16th major appearance, Lahiri said on his Twitter feed he was looking forward to the week ahead

“Nice to get a feel for @PebbleBeachGolf on the best day of the year (so the locals say). Bit different from the @PlayStation version from a decade ago. The course looks pristine and perfect for @usopengolf. Excited for the week to come. #currypower #golfheaven – at Pebble Beach”..

He then added: “It’s almost time. Let’s have the flag fly high. #currypower”
