Sneha, Janneya top Queen Sirikit Cup trials at Noida Golf Course

Sneha Singh and Janneya A. Dasanniee topped the five-day selection trials for the Queen Sirikit Cup at the Noida Golf Course on Monday.

Hyderabad-based Sneha, winner of the 2019 nationals led the field of seven at the trials to pick a three-member team for the Asia-Pacific region’s leading amateur team championship for women.

She registered a five-day tally of 11-over 371 with the four best cards counted towards selection.

Gujarat-based Janneya was the next best with a five-day aggregate of 380 and Nishna Patel was third with a total of 382.

The 42nd edition of the prestigious regional event will be played at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club in Singapore later this year.

Defending national champion Avani Prashanth of Bangalore, a recent invitee to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, has already been named to the Indian team.’

Eight top women amateurs on the Indian Golf Union merit list were invited to the trials and there was one withdrawal, leaving seven to contest the two available slots.

Sneha had rounds of 79, 69, 78, 73 and level-par 72, Only Nishna also brought in a par round on the first day with scores tending towards the higher side through the five days of play.

Mannat Brar, Vidhatri Urs, Smriti Bhargav and Rishika Muralidhar were the other participants at the five-day trials.

Historic event

The Queen Sirikit Cup comprises of three-player teams competing over 54 holes of individual stroke play with the two best daily scores from each team counting towards the overall totals.

From this year, the tournament will be extended to 72 holes over four rounds, a reflection of improving standards and the elite status of the tournament.

Over the past five decades, the Queen Sirikit Cup has hosted many top names in women’s golf, including Australians Karrie Webb, Minjee Lee and Hannah Green, and Lydia Ko of New Zealand.

Others include China’s Feng Shanshan, Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Ya-ni, Koreans Pak Se-ri, Ryu So-yeon, Shin Ji-yae and Kim Hyo-joo, and Patty Tavatanakit, of Thailand among others.

The Queen Sirikit Cup is part of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation’s portfolio of events, the event website said.

These include the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific, Nomura Cup, APGC Senior Championship, and the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophy.
