Ranveer, Krish finish fifth at APGC team event, girls eighth

Ranveer Mitroo rounded off his campaign at the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Championship in Hong Kong with a brace of fifth place finishes on Thursday.

On the final day of the 54-hole competition, the Delhi teenager carded a 2 over par 73 to go with earlier rounds of 69 and 69 seal his top five placing alongside Korea’s Baek Seung-hwa (69-73-69) 

In the girls event, Saanvi Somu too had a closing 73 in the rainy conditions to take tenth place overall, the Indian Golf Union said.

In the team championship, Ranveer and Krish Chawla registered a fifth-place finish with a combined 4 over 430 at the Hong Kong Golf Club. 

China’s Jin Heng Yan and Jin Han won the boys team title with a tally of 4 under 422, just one shot ahead of Korea and Thailand.

Rainy weather made scoring a tough job at Fanling. Ranveer, however, was solid in bringing in a 2 under total of 211. Krish was 22nd with a three-round total of 6 over 219.

New Zealand’s Cooper Moore clinched the boys individual title by two strokes from Tuan Anh Nguyen of Vietnam on a three-day total of 9 under 204.

Learning experience

Ranveer, 16, felt that the tournament had offered him an ‘invaluable learning experience’ and led to a better understanding of his strengths and areas of growth.

“Competing in a field like the APGC Juniors has given me a significant confidence boost. Being surrounded by talented players and experiencing the competitive atmosphere is motivation to push my limits. 

“I realised that I can hold my own against strong competitors, which has reinforced my belief in my abilities,” Ranveer said later.

“The support from the Indian Golf Union has been instrumental in my development as a golfer. They provide access to competitive opportunities that are crucial for my growth,” he added.

In the individual girls’ event, Saanvi Somu took a creditable 10th placing. Kashika Mishra, still recovering from illness, posted an improved 3 over 75 to finish 19th.

Kashika and Saanvi were eighth with a combined 16 over 448 in the final standings. In the mixed team event, Krish and Saanvi ended in 13th place on 11 over 437.

Tight finishes

At the top, Thailand’s Kritchanya Kaopattanaskul and Moore overcame morning downpours and an afternoon interruptions to score come-from-behind finishes in their respective events.

With a closing 64 and a 54-hole total of 12 under 204, Kritchanya edged past Korea’s Park Seo-jin on countback for the girls’ crown with Australian Raegan Denton finished third a shot behind, the championship website said. 

And in the boys championship, Moore birdied the final two holes for a 69 and a three-day tally of 9 under 204 to beat Anh i by two strokes while Thailand’s Parin Sarasmut was third a further stroke away.

For Kritchanya and Thailand there was further cause for celebration in the form of the girls team title which she won alongside Prim Prachnakorn beating Korea by two shots with a three-day total of 20 under 412.

Prim also left Hong Kong with twi trophies, combining with Parin to top the mixed team event.
