For one, who can forget a year Tiger Woods won his 15th Major title at Augusta National. However, aside from Woods, there were some top-class golfers who shone brightly in the year 2019.
Come along as we scan some of the top performers of the year gone by.
Tiger Woods
Without a doubt, if there is one name that rules golf, it is Tiger Woods. The year 2019 belonged to Tiger Woods where he won his 15th Major Championship at the Augusta Masters.
It was the American superstar’s first major title for the last 11 years following his win at the US Open in 2008.
Further, Woods went on to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honour, led Team USA to victory as playing captain in the Presidents Cup in Melbourne as well.
At 43 years pf age, he also became the joint holder of most PGA Tour titles on 82 alongside fellow American legend Sam Snead, the feat coming at the inaugural hosting of the Zozo Championship in Japan last October.
Jin Young Ko
Who said women’s can’t become golf superstars. Jin Young Ko has dominated the women’s game where she has delivered some of the most extravagant performances.
Clearly, Ko Jin-young, as she is also known, is at the top of the women’s golf rankings and it seems she will retain her spot due to her current form.
Jin won her two majors at the ANA Inspiration and the Evian Championship along with two LPGA tour events.
Further, the 22-year-old South Korean went on be adjudged as the Rolex Annika Major Award winner, was the LPGA Player of the year and winner of the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average in the season.
She also topped the Order or Merit, or money list in 2019 just a year after being adjudged Rookie of the Year.
Last but not least, she bettered the LPGA Tour record where she went 114 holes without dropping a shot between the Canadian Women’s Open and the Cambia Portland Classic.
Brooks Koepka
Brooks Koepka is the world’s number one golfer and has delivered some stellar performances over the past few seasons.
In three of the year’s four majors, he either won or finished in the top four to underline his skills and abilities – a title at PGA Championship which he won a second time in a row, tied second at the Masters and a tied fourth place at the Open.
Further, through the 2019 season, Koepka made the cut in 22 out of the 24 tournaments that he entered besides emerging as the US PGA player of the year for a second time in a row.
Rory Mcllroy
Without a doubt, Northern Ireland’s Rory Mcllroy was one of the most consistent performers in 2019. He was in the top 10 for an amazing 19 times besides going on to rack up four title wins.
Speaking about his achievements, McIlroy won the Players Championship, the RBC Canadian Open, the Tour Championship to cap a year to remember.
Not surprisingly, McIlroy was voted as the PGA player of the year where he climbed from the eighth place all the way up to second in the rankings.
Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm Rodriguez was named European Tour golfer of the year in 2019 in a year he defended his titles at the Irish and the Spanish Opens and also recorded 13 top 10 finishes that included a second place at the BMW PGA and a third at the US Open.
Tiger set to open year
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods returns to Torrey Pines, a venue where he has won eight times as a professional in the past, to launch his 2020 season.
Since equalling Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins, expectations are on the rise and he fuelled hopes of his fans by coming in with a 3-0 player record at the Presidents Cup where he led the USA to a dramatic last-day 16-14 victory in Melbourne last month.
In the last few years, Tiger has not had a great record at Torrey Pines and the California venue will be a good test of his back and proof that his performances in Japan last October and thereafter in Australia were not a flash in the pan.
