Professional golf to make its debut in Jammu with J&K Open

Professional golf will travel to Jammu for the first time with the second edition of the J&K Open to be played at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course from Wednesday.

On Monday, the Professional Golf Tour of India and J&K Tourism, announced the event that carries a purse of Rs. 40 lakh.

The tournament which brings professional golf to Jammu for the first time will also be supported by Amazing Jammu, the host venue and hospitality partnerRadisson Blu Hotel, Jammu.

J&K Tourism has long undertaken to promote golf tourism in the region and runs spectacular courses like Royal Springs (Srinagar), Pahalgam (Lidder Valley), Gulmarg and Jammu Tawi.

Top Indian professionals are in the field including Olympian Udayan Mane, Rashid Khan, Khalin Joshi, Yuvraj Singh Sandhu, defending champion Honey Baisoya, Manu Gandas, Karandeep Kochhar and Arjun Sharma, to name a few.

The overseas challenge will be led by Sri Lankans Mithun Perera and N. Thangaraja and Bangladesh’s Jamal Hossain.

Local representation

J&K-based players in the field are professionals Pawan Parihar, Fayaz Ahmed Langoo, Raghav Wahi, Pawan Parihar, Mohd Din Pode besides amateurs Prabhnoor Singh, Vedant Handa and Zubair Hasan Zargar.

“After a successful inaugural edition in the Kashmir Valley last year, we’re delighted to host the cream of Indian professional golf in the Jammu region this year,” Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, advisor to the Lt. Governor said.

“This is the first time professional golf will come to Jammu and I’m confident that the professionals will relish the experience of playing at the magnificent Jammu Tawi Golf Course.”

The Jammu Tawi GC is an 18-hole layout that was commissioned in April of 2011.

It is located on National Highway 1A connecting Jammu to Srinagar, in a valley along the river Tawi.

The course is a lengthy 7,200 yards, has two large and three small water bodies and a water channel flowing through a part of the layout
