Jamal Hossain fired a tournament-low 7 under par 65 to hold the lead on 11 under par 133 in round two of the IndianOil Servo Masters at the Digboi Golf Links in Assam on Thursday.
Gurgaon-based Shivendra Singh Sisodia had a 66 to end the day in second place on 9 under 135 two shots behind the Bangladesh star, the PGTI said.
Karnal’s Mani Ram and Milind Soni of Hyderabad were tied for third on 8 under 136.
Overnight leader Amardeep Malik, former winner Honey Baisoya, Udayan Mane, C. Muniyappa, Vikrant Chopra and Divyansh Dubey shared fifth place on 6 under 138.
Deven Bhumij was the only Digboi-based player to make the final rounds in tied 27th on 1 under 143 after the cut fell at 3 over 147 with 53 professionals going through.
Hossain (68-65), a four-time winner on the PGTI, began the day one shot off the lead. He bogeyed the first hole but bounced back by driving the green on the par-4 third hole for his first birdie.
On a roll
Hossain, 39, after that pulled out some great iron and wedge shots to regularly land it close to the pin to pick up seven more birdies.
His longest conversion of the day was a 12-footer for birdie on the hole 15.
Jamal credited his hitting for his low score, saying, “I feel I regained my hitting form since last week’s event in Jaipur.
“I hadn’t been striking the ball well prior to that. I worked on my hitting to sort out a few things before the Jaipur event and since then I’ve been striking it well.
“I kept hitting it close today especially with my approach shots to create chances and left myself just one long putt. Importantly, I came back strongly despite a bogey at the start of the day.
“The birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth gave impetus to my round. I did well on the Par-5s scoring three birdies on them.”
Sisodia (69-66) had an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys, chipping with perfection to pick up birdie on 17 and also from the edge and bunker to set up some short birdie putts.
