Four Indian amateurs will participate in the two best-known competitions run by Golf Australia later this month, the Indian Golf Union has said.
World number 50 Avani Prashanth and Herena Kang along with Sandeep Yadav and All India Amateur runner-up Rohit Narwal are the four selected by the IGU for the Australia visit.
The four will first take part in the Australian Master of the Amateurs event from January 9 to 12 at the Southern Golf Club in Victoria.
Up next will be the high profile adidas Australian Amateur at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club and Keysborough Golf Club also in Victoria from January 16 to 19.
Avani Prashanth had a productive 2023 during which she won the individual medal at the Queen Sirikit Cup in Manila and was fourth at the World Amateur event’s individual section in Abu Dhabi.
Rich returns
She also won a pro event on the Ladies European Tour’s Access Series and came close to earning a card to the LET, but missed out and has decided to carry on as an amateur for a little longer.
Heena Kang won the domestic Order of Merit and will make her international debut in Australia. Her youngster sister, Ceerat, has already represented India.
Haryana golfer Rohit, a two-time winner in 2023 who also topped the IGU Order of Merit, and Sandeep Yadav of West Bengal, form the men’s team.
Rohit finished second to Nepal’s Subhash Tamang at the 2023 All India Amateur Championships in Kolkata, while Yadav won the 2022 All India Amateurs, India’s national championship that is over a century old.
The IGU has planned an elaborate exposure plan for India’s top amateurs and will be sending teams to events around the world in 2024.
