DGC League set for expanded Season Two launch with 20 teams

Twenty teams will vie for top honours in the second edition of the Lloyd Delhi Golf Club League that gets under way on September 29.

The league, which will feature 13 days of competitive golf, will conclude on October 22 with to more teams than the number from edition one last year.

Each team will comprise of 20 players, supported by a mentor and a Coach. The tournament will be played on a “four-ball better-ball matchplay” format.
“The Lloyd DGC League prides itself for having incorporated the best practices in the format to make it fair, competitive and enjoyable,” club captain Maj Gen AP Dere (Retd) said.

“The mentoring programme of the League has some of India’s finest golfers sharing their knowledge and expertise with members, a great learning opportunity, especially the juniors.”

“The DGC has produced 14 Arjuna Awardees and our golfers have won on nearly every major tour worldwide,” added said Lt. Gen. Balbir Sandhu, chairman of the tournament organising committee.

“Through the Lloyd Delhi Golf Club League, we wish to further hone our talent and continue to provide Indian and world golf with champions”.

Committed group

Some of those who have honed their skills at the DGC are involved with the league at different levels, including Arjuna Award winners Shiv Kapur, Nonita Lal Qureshi and Amit Luthra. 

Gaurav Ghei, the first Indian to qualify for the Open Championship, Vivek Bhandari, Amandeep Johl, Mehar Atwal and Ayesha Kapur, besides top coaches Jasjit Singh and Ajai Gupta are also playing key roles.

“This is an opportunity for me to give back to the club some of the knowledge I have gained over the years,” said Ghei, whose chip-in victory in the Gadgil Western Masters in 1995 is still fondly remembered.

Event format

The league will first have a round-robin stage followed by a knockout. During each playoff match between two teams, each team will field seven pairs in the four-ball better ball format.

The 20 teams have been divided into four groups. After the league stage, two teams from each group enter the knockout. The finals will be played on October 22.
BMW-Deutsche Motoren are the defending champions of the event powered by Vredestein Tyres.
